Cost Engineer

LOOKING FOR A ROLE WHERE YOUR FINANCIAL INSIGHT TRULY SHAPE THE OUTCOME?

As a Cost Engineer, you are responsible within the project for collecting costs, budgeting and offering additional work, creating and keeping financial overviews up to date, and ultimately drawing up the final invoice.

You ensure that the financial processes run smoothly and that customers are informed about them in a timely and correct manner. You are the financial conscience of the project team and, based on your in-depth analysis, you ask critical questions about progress and returns. Based on your insight, you will support the Project Manager on more complex and/or economically vulnerable projects and you will also be able to recognise and exploit less obvious financial opportunities within the project.

In addition, based on information from your own observations and from the project team, you will provide accurate calculations and quotations for additional and less work. You will always work under the ultimate responsibility of the Project Manager, being his financial right-hand man, giving you a crucial role in the success of the project. 

The following tasks will be part of your job:

  • In consultation with the Project Manager, takes care of setting up the project in the ERP system and creates and maintains the project and work list based on the budget;
  • analyses the financial impact of (technical) specifications from customers and subcontractors in relation to the budget;
  • regularly monitors repair work on board to gain an understanding of the scope and degree of difficulty in order to arrive at an accurate invoice;
  • identifies deviations, risks and opportunities;
  • budget for additional work based on work descriptions from work preparation, quotations from subcontractors and own observations, and process this in an additional work order and, in consultation with the Project Manager, provide a competitive price and a clear and accurate specification;
  • keeps the financial overview up to date on a daily basis, provides a weekly summary for the Project Manager and ensures that the invoice is correct and complete before the end of the project;
  • advises the Project Manager when discussing the invoice with representatives of the customer and/or representatives of loss adjustment agencies;
  • also maintains contact with third parties, including subcontractors, on behalf of the Project Manager, if necessary. 

Do you have:

  • Required i a working and thinking level corresponding to intermediate vocational education (MBO) to higher professional education (HBO) level;
  • flexible and a proactive attitude when gathering and sharing information;
  • familiar with the shipping/ship repair sector and has theoretical and practical (technical) shipbuilding and/or mechanical engineering knowledge;
  • has insight into financial relationships gained through education or experience;
  • demonstrates analytical skills;
  • aware of the commercial side of the work: ensures completeness;
  • knowledge and experience of financial management in project organizations;
  • knowledge and experience with MS Office, including Projects. Knowledge of IFS, Floor2Plan, Power-BI and the use of data flows is an advantage;
  • must have some practical knowledge of or insight into materials, lead times, price levels and, more generally, the various ship repair processes;
  • able to communicate factually and clearly, even under pressure;
  • a command of the English language at a level that allows for effective written communication (about production-related matters).
