WHAT IF A CANDIDATE CELEBRATES DIFFERENT HOLIDAYS THAN ARE ACKNOWLEDGED IN THE NETHERLANDS AS NATIONAL DAYS OFF?

When hiring a newcomer, it is possible that you also get in touch with different religions and cultures than you are maybe familiar with. Knowing the answers to different kind of cultural questions, can really help with integration of the employee!

When en employee celebrates different holidays than we do in the Netherlands, for example the end of the Ramadan (Eid ul-Fitr) or Orthodox Easter, an employer is not obliged to give the employee a day off (gift them an extra day off on top of their other holidays.) However, the employer does have to give the employee the chance to take a day off (from their standard amount of free days as stated in their employment contract).
